The Bonneville Salt Flats is hands-down one of my favorite locations in Utah! Actually, it’s one of my favorite places in the world. The stunning landscape of white as far as the eye can see feels otherworldly. I love how the austere setting really showcases the couple and their love for each other without any distractions.
The salt flats are about a two hour drive from Salt Lake City. For this formal session, the couple and I drove out together. Sharing a car gave us the unique opportunity to get to know each other. We got to enjoy deep conversations on the way. We talked about everything from school and work to religion and politics. I loved getting to know my clients in this way.
We started the session at sunset. I love the color palette created by the beautiful golden light as the sun went down. The bride and groom’s style was classic and timeless. Her wedding dress was modern, simple and chic. I think the salt flats were the perfect choice for their First Look.
The groom’s reaction during the First Look was the cutest ever! His face positively lit up at the sight of his beautiful bride in her gown. The two of them were all smiles while they held each other close. I consider myself the luckiest that I get to witness love like this as my job!
I want to take a second and provide some tips for my brides and grooms to prepare for their First Look/ formal session. It is a big deal, after all. It’s the first time the two of them get to see each other just as they’ll look on the wedding day and everything starts to seem real. The first thing I recommend is professional hair and makeup. It makes such a difference in photos and in making the bride feel her best. The next most important thing to remember are florals. The wedding florist will often make a second bridal bouquet and boutonniere just for the formal session. This bride and her mother created their own bouquet for the occasion and it added a lovely touch. I tell all of my couples to make a packing list of all accessories needed like rings, shoes, watches, jewelry, veil, etc. so nothing gets forgotten. The most important thing is to relax and have fun though. I’m here to take care of the rest.
