With breathtaking views of the Wasatch Mountains, Millcreek Canyon is a stunning location for engagement & wedding photos. Located just east of Salt Lake Valley (south of I-80 and Parleys Canyon), Millcreek Canyon is an outdoor playground for skiing and mountain biking. It features ridgeline views filled with forested greenery in the spring and summer, and a snow-covered oasis in the winter.
Millcreek Canyon is easily accessible, even to the most novice adventurer, making it an ideal location for a photoshoot. Whether you are celebrating your recent engagement or searching for an outdoor photo location in Utah for your wedding portraits, you’ll find all the details needed to create Millcreek Canyon photos through the information below.
Best Time of Year to Schedule Your Phoptoshoto at Millcreek Canyon
Winter
Millcreek Canyon is open for foot traffic only beginning November 1st, with vehicle access reopening in the late spring, contingent on weather. Winter photos at Millcreek Canyon are possible if you are willing to explore the trails through ice and snow. During winter, the canyon is quiet and features serene blankets of snow and white-capped mountains off in the distance. It feels as though the canyon is asleep, offering a reprieve from the movement of the city.
Spring & Summer
The spring and summer months are when lush topiaries and sprawling fields of wildflowers pop up at Millcreek Canyon. Photos captured during each of these seasons evoke the revitalization happening in the canyon. You can expect a higher amount of foot traffic from local visitors and tourists, making an early morning sunrise or evening sunset photoshoot most ideal.`
Fall
Throughout fall, Millcreek Canyon is a wonderland of warm tones. Ombré hues of red, orange, and gold fill the canyon, all in all creating an atmosphere of warmth. Many locals visit the canyon during this time to refresh their family photos or for picnic outings. However, if you are interested in Millcreek Canyon engagement or wedding photos in the fall months, I can suggest a time that will be best for working with the beauty of the landscape, minus any present onlookers.
Bringing Your Dog to Your Millcreek Canyon Photoshoot
Millcreek Canyon is an outdoor photo location in Utah that allows visitors to bring their fur babies. If you’d like to bring your dog along to your photoshoot, it is allowable, provided that they are leashed for the duration of your session. From my experience of capturing Millcreek Canyon photos, I also recommend that you bring along a trusted friend or family member to help with your pup during those moments when they are not featured on camera, or need to get the zoomies out.
Visiting Millcreek Canyon
There is a daily user fee of $5 per vehicle when visiting Millcreek Canyon for photos. This fee is paid when exiting and covers your access to all hiking trails and picnic areas.
Closures
Millcreek Canyon is closed to vehicular traffic, but not foot traffic, beginning on November 1st. The canyon typically reopens in late spring and is dependent on current weather and road conditions.
Directions
To arrive at Millcreek Canyon, you’ll take I-215 South from I-80, from there take exit 4 off of I-215 and go left (east) on 3900 South. Just after crossing under the highway, you’ll turn left on Wasatch Blvd. Finally, take the next right on Millcreek Canyon Road.
Parking
When meeting my clients for Millcreek Canyon photos, I always suggest parking at Millcreek Pipeline Trail. This will allow us to begin exploring the area together, creating storytelling images each step of the way.
